MOUNT OLIVE -- Services to celebrate the long and splendid life of retired Army Capt. Annie Eudelle Parker Garner will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Frank Turner, the Rev. Paul Rose and the Rev. Carlisle Franks officiating.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.
Cap. Garner, age 94, passed away Thursday in her home in Garner's Chapel.
She was a native of Smith Chapel community, west of Mount Olive, where, as a child, she became a member of Smith Chapel Methodist Church.
Upon her high school graduation, she attended James Walker School of Nursing in Wilmington, after which she enlisted in the United States Army. While in the Army, she served as an army nurse and attained the rank of captain.
Upon her returning home, she began a nursing career with employment at the Lenoir County Hospital in Kinston, which was followed at Wayne Memorial in Goldsboro. She also provided private duty nursing.
Returning to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for public health instruction, she became a public health nurse, working with Lenoir and later Duplin County Health departments until her retirement.
Becoming a resident of Garner's Chapel community after her marriage to Theron O. Garner, she united with Garner's Chapel Baptist Church, which became her church home.
She was also a member of the local post of the American Legion.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Garner Sloan Herring of Garner's Chapel community near Mount Olive, and Dr. Thesia Isadora Garner of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Felicia Sloan Horn and husband, Jack, of Clayton, Adam Garner Sloan and wife, Windy, of Goldsboro and Annadora Garner of Washington, D.C.; a great-grandson, Liam Claven Sloan of Goldsboro; and from both the Parker and Garner clans, numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by Mr. Garner; her parents, Willoughby and Mattie Godwin Parker; two brothers, Alfred Parker and Russell Parker; and two sisters, Col. Mattie Virginia Parker, United States Army, and Willie Mae Parker Swinson.
Though her marriage ensued her leaving the Smith Chapel community, her love for the place never left her, and in death it is there where her remains will rest amongst kindred in Flowers-Parker Cemetery. Military honors will be presented after which entombment will take place immediately following the service Tuesday.
