MOFFAT PATRICK "PAT" WITHERINGTON

Sept. 22, 1920-March 24, 2010

STATESVILLE -- Pat Witherington, 89, died quietly at his home March 24, more than a year after being diagnosed with inoperable cancer.

Pat was born in Goldsboro to the late Ben Witherington and Mildred Patrick Witherington. He enjoyed tennis and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. His father died at an early age, and Pat worked to support his mother and for college. After college, he moved to Statesville and was a CPA. Pat earned a bachelor's degree in commerce from the University of North Carolina in 1942, and served in the Navy after graduating, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant commander.

After his discharge, Pat began his civilian career as a certified public accountant. He formed his own CPA firm in Statesville with Gene Boyer as Boyer and Witherington.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Harriett Faison Riley, his brother, Ben Witherington Jr., and his sister, Mildred Witherington Grotland.

He is survived by his second wife, Patty Morrison Wiley; his son, Rick Witherington and wife, Deborah, of Charlotte; his daughters, Ginny Tarleton and husband, Hal, of Wilson, Ann Stuntz and husband, Dave, of Durham, Mary Crawford and husband, Rob, of Troutman; stepson, Mac Wiley and wife, Lydia, of Kingsport, Tenn.; and stepdaughter, Jane Wiley of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, Forest Park Presbyterian Church, or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.
