PIKEVILLE -- James "Hoss" Edward Gardner, 81, went to be with his Heavenly Father Sunday night at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

A service to celebrate the life of Hoss will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church, with pastor Mike Williams and pastor Jimmy Forehand officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Pikeville Cemetery.

A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late Theodore and Mary Blizzard Gardner.

Hoss, as he was known by his many friends, was a retired farmer and a member of Free Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

For many years he served on The Goldsboro Rescue Squad, and he and his wife, Dorothy, were paper carriers for the Goldsboro News-Argus for 45 years.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Thorn Gardner; sons, Carlo Gardner and wife, Sherry, and Joey Gardner and wife, Cathy, of Pikeville; daughter, Tammy Gardner of Goldsboro; sisters, Esther Lancaster and husband, J. R., of Pikeville, Grace Davis and husband, Leslie, of Pikeville, Arlene Gardner of Pikeville, Betty Jean Corbett and husband, Donald, of Goldsboro and Linda Casey and husband, Ben, of Goldsboro; brothers, George Gardner and wife, Carol, of Pikeville and Thedie Gardner and wife, Anna Rose, of Goldsboro; brother-in-law, Jimmy Grantham of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Christy Gardner, Justin Gardner and wife, Natalie, Derek Hill and wife, Brittany, and Kylie Hill; a great-granddaughter, Alisa Craft; and a stepgranddaughter, Ashlee Pearce.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Nina Gardner; his sister, Lou Grantham; and grandson, Brandon Gardner.

The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service in the church fellowship hall, and other times they will be at the residence of Carlo and Sherry Gardner, 425 Hoss Lane in Pikeville.
