William Philip "Billy" Wells, 31, 103 Clairmont Road, died Wednesday evening at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family and friends.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with pastor Andy Stovall officiating. Burial with the Wayne County Sheriff Department Honor Guard providing honors will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Born in Wayne County, he was the grandson of the late William Haywood Wells and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Billy was a former deputy with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for eight years and former police officer with the Emerald Isle Police Department prior to his illness. He was employed with Carolina Phone and Alarms at the time of his illness. He loved riding horses and spending time on trail rides with his friends.

Billy is survived by his parents, William "Buster" and Lisa Talerico Wells of the home; his fiancée, C.C. Stribble of Goldsboro; his paternal grandmother, Virginia Wells Hudson of Goldsboro; his maternal grandparents, Philip and Rosalie Talerico of Goldsboro; his aunts, Susan Best and husband, Stan, Susan Jones and husband, Jimmie, Wilma Brown and husband, Robert, Nancy Howell and friend, Tommy; his uncle, Roger Wells and wife, Joni; his cousins, Chris Holloman, Jimmy and Chris Jones, Amanda Sheets, Ashley Howell, Tammy Walker, Frank Shingleton, Joy Wells and Heather Wells; his beloved K-9, Kane; and his horse, Feather.

In addition to flowers, memorial gifts in Billy's name may be directed to the Rays of Hope Relay for Life team, c/o Vickey Sanderson, 513 S. Bentonville Road, Four Oaks, N.C., 27524.

A very special thank you is extended to Dr. Kasbari, Angie Walston and the staff at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center and the seventh floor staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital for all their attention and love shown to Billy during his battle with cancer.

The family will greet friends tonight from 6 to 9 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
