LOUISE D. JONES

RALEIGH -- Louise Davis Jones, 95, was born and raised in Goldsboro. She died peacefully Tuesday at Rex Nursing Care. She lived the last five years at Rex, and we are thankful for the concerned and loving care the staff there gave to her.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Wynne Center at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St. Interment will be in Historic Oakwood Cemetery.
As a girl, Louise enjoyed Girl Scouting, banjo playing and basketball. She completed her freshman year of college at Duke University and then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce in 1937. At Carolina, she was voted the first female commencement marshall in the history of the school and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
Mrs. Jones raised three children in Raleigh and was a devoted and conscientious parent, volunteering as a Girl Scout leader, room parent and dance recital volunteer. She later became very active in the Raleigh Woman's Club, the Garden Club and the DAR.
She was a longtime member of Edenton Street Methodist Church.
An avid traveler, Mrs. Jones and her husband of 63 years, the late Otis Vance Jones Jr., drove often around the United States, took many cruises overseas and went to Ireland at least 10 times.
She also worked with him as a bookkeeper in Jones Brokerage Co. that they started in 1950, and she loved investing in the stock market.
She loved the beach, a 5 p.m. "toddy" and British comedies.
Never one to be accused of cleaning too much, Lulu (as she was known to her grandchildren) proudly displayed a "Martha Doesn't Live Here" sign in her kitchen. She collected many things and was known to throw nothing away.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her three children, Van Michael Jones of Raleigh, Linda Jones Northcutt of Raleigh and Nancy Jones Armstrong of Atlanta; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, who loved her and will miss her greatly.
We will remember her sitting in her favorite chair with her feet up on the yellow mushroom ottoman doing crossword puzzles, her bed covered with everything and her face lighting up at the appearance of her children and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
We are also grateful to Meals on Wheels of Wake County, which gives wonderful services to the elder population of this area.
