C. W. Turner Jr., 78, 189 Lancaster Road, died Thursday with his family by his side at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church, 752 Stoney Creek Church Road in Goldsboro, with the Rev. Gary Bailey and the Rev. Barry Williamson officiating. Following the funeral, there will be a time of visiting and sharing with the family. Committal will follow at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 U.S. 117 South in Dudley.

Mr. Turner, a native of Mount Olive, was the son of the late Alice Hudson Turner and Charlie William Turner Sr.

He served his country in the National Guard, Army, during the Korean Conflict, then in the Air Force Reserves, totaling 16 years of service.

In 1959, he joined Patetown Fire Department, serving as chief from 1963 to 1998. Also, he was past president of the Wayne County Fireman's Association and was previously chairman of the board of directors for Patetown Fire Department. He received the G. Edgar Summerlin Fireman of the Year Award from the Wayne County Fireman's Association in 1981.

Mr. Turner was a member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Christine Hare Turner; two daughters, Cathy Turner Gurley (Hardy) of Pikeville and Donna Turner Parker (Bobby) of LaGrange; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be members of Patetown Volunteer Fire Department.
