PIKEVILLE -- Durwood Joseph Smith, 67, passed away Saturday evening at Wilson Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Hollowell officiating. Burial will be in Pikeville Cemetery with fireman honors.

Durwood was born in Wayne County July 22, 1942, to the late Johnnie D. Smith and Eunice Lancaster Smith.

He retired from DuPont and was currently working with Howell Racing.

Durwood was an active member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, where he had served as the Sunday school superintendent and where he was currently serving as the treasurer of the Methodist men and chairman of the church council.

He was chief of the Antioch Volunteer Fire Department and had served as chief for 33 years. Durwood was awarded Wayne County's Fireman of the Year in 1998. He had also served as president of the Wayne County Fireman's Association from 1992 to 1993.

Durwood coached Babe Ruth Baseball for many years and had served as past president of the Babe Ruth Association.

Durwood is survived by his wife of 49 years, June S. Smith; his daughters, Kathy McGowan and husband Andy of Pikeville and Lisa Sullivan and husband, Brent, of Nahunta; his son, Dirk Smith of Pikeville; his sister, Dale Williams and husband, Melvin, of Pikeville; and his brothers, Rex Smith and wife, Nancy, of Goldsboro and Brooks Smith and wife, Terry, of Stantonsburg. He was also the proud grandfather of three grandchildren, Brad Peele, Anna Sullivan and Emma Smith. They were the apples of his eye.

You could always find Durwood attending ball games and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Darrell Smith.

Members of Antioch Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2830 Antioch Road, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home, 2830 Antioch Road in Pikeville.
