Mary Olivia Shumate Matthews, 85, died Wednesday morning at J. Arthur Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.
Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at First Baptist Church of Oak Island, with visitation scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon. Funeral services will also be held Saturday at noon at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro, with the family receiving friends from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the funeral service, with the Rev. Charlie Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park in Goldsboro.
She was born in Martinsville, Va., to the late Harry Jones Sr. and Pattie Merriman Shumate and was married to Daniel H. Matthews Jr.
A homemaker, she was a graduate of Goldsboro High School, a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island, a former member of Love Memorial Baptist Church of Goldsboro and a charter member of Madison Avenue Baptist Church of Goldsboro.
In addition to her husband, Olivia is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen M. and Donnie Lizotte of Wake Forest and Mollie M. and F. E. McKee of Cornelius; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Nancy Matthews of Charlotte; two brothers, Ed Shumate and Charles Shumate both of Goldsboro; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris), Jonathan, Mac and Colton; and two great-grandchildren, Cody and Nicole.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy S. Valentino, and a brother, Harry J. Shumate Jr.
