GLORIA M. HASSELBACH
March 28, 1924-July 27, 2009
CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Gloria Macas Hasselbach, a resident of Sandhill Drive, Goldsboro, for more than 40 years, died July 27 in her new home, surrounded by her daughters, Frances Charlotte Sabeh and Charlene "Charlie" Susan Hasselbach.
She will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery on Monday.
Mrs. Hasselbach was born in New York, N.Y., March 28, 1924.
Mrs. Hasselbach received her Associate of Arts degree from Wayne Community College, her Bachelor of Arts degree in art from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) and her Master of Arts degee in art/painting from East Carolina University. She taught calligraphy for many years at Wayne Community College and other local community colleges. She continued to hone her art/painting skills by taking classes at the Arts Council of Wayne County. She also took violin lessons at the Arts Council beginning in her late 70s.
She was an active member of the local AARP Chapter, serving multiple positions including president, and was also on the board of directors.
She was an active volunteer (again beginning in her late 70s) in the Guardian Ad Litem program. She was an active member of her woman's group at the Providence Methodist Church.
She was an artist from a very early age and continued to paint until her lymphoma curtailed all activity. Her specialty was water colors of flowers, and at the time of her death, she was the spotlight artist featured in her retirement community.
She was a woman of grace and dignity and very slow to anger. She was quietly but deeply religious and achieved the status of "disciple" via her studies at Providence Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter "Frances" Charlotte Sabeh of Carmichael, Calif., and her daughter and son-in-law, Charlene "Charlie" Susan Hasselbach and Peter Jenniskens, Ph.D., of Mountain View, Calif. She is also survived by her two granddaughters, Nadia Sabeh, Ph.D., of Tucson, Ariz., and Janan Sabeh, currently working in Cairo, Egypt. She is also survived by her niece, Vickie Bartkus and family of St. Paul, Minn., who adopted her little dog, Fella, and gave him a very loving home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Josephine Macas; her husband, Walter Carl Hasselbach; and her sister, Dorothy Gustafson of Indiana.
She will be deeply missed, especially by her younger daughter, Charlene, who will miss her Mom calling her "hon."
