Dr. William Evander Plummer Sr., 84, passed away on Saturday at his home surrounded by his family.

The family will receive friends during the visitation beginning at 1 p.m.

The memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro. Services will be conducted by Dr. Homer Morris and the Rev. Joann Turner. A private family inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Dr. Plummer was born in Hoke County on June 16, 1924, to the late John Henry Plummer and Virginia Haskin Powell Plummer.

Dr. Plummer was an Army Air Corps (now called the Air Force) P-47 fighter pilot in England and France during World War II. Prior to going to England, he was stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Currently, he was active in base affairs and a member of the Order of the Daedalians.

Dr. Plummer graduated from Auburn University in June 1950, with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and immediately returned to Goldsboro. He practiced veterinary medicine in Goldsboro for 59 years and was employed as a consultant by Goldsboro Milling Co. at the time of his passing. He was a member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (and past president), the American Veterinary Medical Associa-tion and the American Association of Swine Practitioners. Dr. Plummer received the Distinguished Veterinarian of the Year in 1974 and 1999 from the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association and was named to the Wayne County Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1989.

Dr. Plummer was proud of serving Wayne County as a veterinarian, Goldsboro as a Commissioner of the Housing Authority for 16 years and his profession as a 10-year member of the admissions committee of the N.C. State Veterinary School. In 2003, he was honored by the Wayne County Historical Society as an individual who made a significant contribution to the Wayne County area and inducted to their Wall of Fame.

Dr. Plummer was a Third-degree Mason and Past Master of Goldsboro Lodge 634.

Dr. Plummer was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church for 59 years, singing in the choir for the last 12 years.

Dr. Plummer is survived by his wife, Mary Saidla Plummer; his children, Dr. William E. Plummer Jr. of Atascadero, Calif., Lee Plummer Templeton (George) of Reidsville, Alan Saidla Plummer (Carolyn) of Goldsboro, and John Mark Plummer (Gaynell) of White Cloud, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

He is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Plummer Wilson (Dennis) of Garner and Virginia Plummer Allison of Raeford.
