MATTIE OATES

Miss Mattie Serena Oates of 214-A West Main St., Mount Olive, passed away in the familiar surroundings of her home on Thursday night.

Born in Sampson County, she was the daughter of Mattie Blanche Sutton Oates and John Martin Oates Sr. and the granddaughter of Cena Caroline and Marion Harper Sutton and Mary Venetia Martin William and Jethro Oates.

Ms. Oates was a graduate of Piney Grove High School in a class of 10 seniors. During World War II, she was employed by the Wilmington N.C. Shipyard, and retired after 30 years of service at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Marion Ronald Oates Sr., Ralph Oates, John William "Bunk" Oates, John Martin "Jack" Oates Jr., George Edward Oates and Charles Rudolph Oates. Surviving are her brother, Hugh F. Oates Sr. and her sisters, Hilda Oates Jones, Jean Oates Westbrook, Miriam Oates Grimes, all of Mount Olive, and members of the Oates Family Clan including the extended families of her siblings.

Visitation was held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. At other times, family and friends will be received at the home of Hugh F. Oates Sr., 100 North Breazeale Ave. in Mount Olive. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Wayne Memorial Park, Goldsboro, officiated by Dr. H. Dennis Draper Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Mount Olive Family Medicine Center Foundation, attn.: Lisa Hooks, 201 N. Breazeale Ave., Mount Olive, N.C. 28365.
