Jean Wiggins Hollowell, 76, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
She was born in Wayne County on Jan. 27,1930, to the late Frank and Hazel Britt Wiggins. She was married to the late David Virgil Hollowell. Jean began working with the Bank of Wayne in 1950 as a bookkeeper and continued as head bookkeeper when it merged with Wachovia in 1955. In 1971, she served as the business administration officer and retired as budget administration officer and security officer with more than 40 years of service. For the last several years, she has been the bookkeeper for the Bicycle Post in Greenville. Jean was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hollowell is survived by her son, Kenneth Dwight Hollowell of the home; her daughter, Deborah H. Chilton and husband, Delmer, of Brasstown and Gibsonville; two grandsons, David Chilton and Joseph Chilton; her brothers and sister, Kenneth Wiggins and wife, Inez, of Goldsboro, Gerry Smith and husband, Ellis, of Greenville, and Durwood Wiggins and wife, Irma, of Goldsboro; and her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Hilda Howell, Evelyn Rose and Seth B. Hollowell, all of Goldsboro. She is also survived by special family friends, Randy, Kelly, Braelyn and Garris Wade, all of LaGrange; and many special nieces, nephews, church family and neighbors.
Jean devoted her life to helping people with autism and other developmental disabilities. She was past treasurer for the National Autism Society. In August 2005, Gov. Mike Easley reappointed her for another four years as a member of the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities. She was currently serving as chairwoman for the Finance Committee. In the past, she served on the council in various capacities including chairwoman, treasurer and vice chairwoman. She was first appointed to the council in 1994. Jean worked with a program called "That All My Worship". This program was to make churches aware of the need for adults who had developmental disabilities to attend church and worship. She had served on the board of trustees of the Wayne County Group Home. Jean served as past president of the Autism Society of North Carolina, and in 1994, she was the recipient of the Jeffries Award for her dedicated service to the Autism Society of North Carolina.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at her residence.
