ALMA H. BASS

EUREKA- Alma N. Howell Bass, 73, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital after fighting a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer.
A celebration of her life and legacy was held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Nelson Baptist Church in Eureka. A graveside service and burial were held today, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. at Eureka Cemetery.
Mrs. Bass was born to the late George Jackson Howell and Ada Tyndall Howell. She was the granddaughter of the late Rev. Alan and Martha Simmons Tyndall and the late Jackson and Jeanette Howell.
She was a hard worker all her life at home, the workplace, the church and the community. She retired from Bussmann Industries in 1995. She was a faithful lifetime member of Mt. Nelson Baptist Church and a dedicated servant of the Lord, giving her time and talents to her church.
In the early years, she taught Sunday school and Bible school and sang in the choir. She volunteered wherever the need arose. For 20 years, she worked with the North Carolina State Baptist Lay Renewal Team in North Carolina and Georgia. She assisted with the senior citizens dinners, cooked many meals for the sick and visited and ministered to many people.
When God called her husband into the ministry, she stood by his side as always and supported him, volunteering her services to Calvary Baptist Church for many years, even during time of sickness. She witnessed and ministered to every person she met.
She was a devoted minister's wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to all. She was a humble person and loved by all who knew her. She always had a "heavenly" smile on her face, even during her lengthy illness.
The love of her life was the Lord, her husband and family. She "adopted" many people under her wing as a mentor and led many people to Christ through her walk of Christian love for others. She touched all hearts that knew her.
Mrs. Bass is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, the Rev. Pete Bass; daughters, Lynn Bass Winstead and husband, Ronnie, of Elm City, Sherl Bass Sauls and husband, Doug, of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Shane Smith and wife, Kacy, and Patrick Smith of Goldsboro and Kimberly Lynn Carter of Elm City; a sister, Agnes Bradshaw of Fremont.
Also, there are several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of relatives and special friends and a very special adopted grandchild, Tyler Mooring.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Molene Windham and Helen Howell; brothers, Percy Leon Howell and George Jackson Howell Jr.; and nephew, Lee Howell.
Flowers are welcome or donations may be made to the Wayne County American Cancer Society.
The family will greet friends after the service and other times at the residence at 3033 N.C. 222 east, Fremont.
A special thanks go to the nurses, staff and physicians who cared for her at Leo Jenkins Cancer Center in Greenville, Southeastern Medical Oncology in Goldsboro and to the nurses aids and staff of the ICU and seventh-floor staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital during her many visits and lengthy stays. Your compassion, expertise and care ministered to her and our family needs daily and we are forever grateful.
