LA DELL E. SHACKELFORD

Died Aug. 30, 2006

La Dell Edmundson Shackelford, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher and friend died Aug. 30, 2006, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Shackelford was born in Wayne County, the daughter of the late Burrell and Bessie Lancaster Edmundson. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1948 and from East Carolina Teachers College in 1951. A respected professional educator for 31 years, Mrs. Shackelford taught at schools in South Carolina, Virginia, the Philippine Islands and North Carolina. She retired from the North Carolina Public Schools in 1992 at Northeast Elementary School.

A resident of Pikeville and a lifelong member of Antioch Free Will Baptist Church, her love of music led her to serve as director of music at Antioch for many years.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, at 3 p.m. at Antioch Free Will Baptist Church, followed by interment in the Edmundson Family Cemetery. The Rev. Sherman Dilley and the Rev. Jefferson D. Daughtry will officiate.

Mrs. Shackelford is survived by her husband of 55 years, Charles A. Shackelford; a daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine Shackelford-Giddens and David Giddens of Greensboro; a son, Charles A. Shackelford Jr. of Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law, Bradford E. Shackelford and Jo Simpson Shackelford of Wilson; four grandchildren, Anderson and Cameron Shackelford of Wilson and Ian and Nuria Lorena Shackelford of Charlotte; two stepgrandchildren, Lalenja Harrington of Greensboro and Rhiannon Giddens of Durham; a great-grandson, Justin Harrington of Greensboro; two brothers, Roscoe Edmundson, and wife, Clara G. Edmundson, and Henry Edmundson, and wife, Joanne M. Edmundson of Pikeville; five sisters, Mollie E. Kirby of Raleigh, Bertha Davis of Fremont, Ruth Hokum of Swansboro, Atha Tunnell of Hertford and Lawlos Bland of Orlando, Fla.

She was preceded in death by brothers, James Carroll "Jim" Edmundson and B.J. Edmundson.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
