GEORGE F. BRODIE

Col. George F. Brodie, retired Air Force, 85, died peacefully Aug. 17 in Chapel Hill.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.

Formerly of Goldsboro, he had been living at Carolina Meadows of Chapel Hill since 1995.

Col. Brodie was born in Richmond, Va., Dec. 16, 1920, to the late George F. Brodie Sr. and Myrtle Belcher Brodie.

He graduated from Martinsville High School in Martinsville, Va., in 1937 and later attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

He entered the United States Air Corps in February 1941, completed pilot training and was commissioned that year. While stationed at Albuquerque, N.M., in early 1942, he met Norma Jean Wortman, daughter of Frank and Anne Wortman of Dexter, N.M. They were married May 9, 1942. Norma Brodie died in Goldsboro in 1992 shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary.

Col. Brodie served for 29 years in the Air Force and retired in Goldsboro in 1970. During his career, he was stationed in Italy, the Philippines, Morocco, Peru and the Panama Canal Zone as well as locations throughout the United States. He was stationed in Goldsboro at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in 1943, 1958 to 1962 and 1969 to 1970.

He had attended Air Command and Staff School and the Air War College.

He is survived by his son, George Brodie, and daughter-in-law, Meriel, of Raleigh, and his brother, Robert Brodie of Wilcox, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

Arrangements are being handled by Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
