ALFRED J. LINTON SR.

Sept. 11, 1925-Aug. 24, 2006

Alfred James Linton Sr., 80, died Thursday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A graveside funeral with full military honors and Masonic Rites will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. Steve Holder officiating.

Born in Manistee, Mich., he was the son of the late Richard H. and Gladys Linton and was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Meredith Linton.

Mr. Linton was an active member of the community, having served as Master of Goldsboro Masonic Lodge 643, the York Rite Masonic Bodies, the Masonic York Rite College, KYCH and Lily of the Valley as well as Sovereign Master of the Demolay Allied Masonic Degree and a member of the Sudan Temple Shrine.

He served his nation during World War II as an undercover operative in the OSS. He was a highly decorated veteran and founder of the Golden Eagles "OSS undercover agents who jumped behind enemy lines."

Mr. Linton was a life member of all veteran organizations and state commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart of the USA as well as the local chapter 657. He was a life member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

He was founder and owner of Linton Mill Service Inc., Nasco Ltd., and Linton Industrial Fabricators Inc., from which he retired in 1992 after 40 years of service to the community.

Mr. Linton was a columnist for the Eastern Carolina Times Enquire for which he wrote a weekly column "Linton's Logic" for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy James Linton; two daughters, Linda M. Linton Drohan and Angila Linton Sutton; a son, Alfred James "Freddie" Linton Jr.; seven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Linton's wish prior to his death was that he not be remembered for his accomplishments while alive, but for the many friends he made and the many hearts he may have touched while serving his nation.

Remember me not with tears and sorrow, but smiles and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Family members will greet friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C., 29605-4277, or to the Sudan Shrine Temple, P.O. Drawer 490, New Bern, 28563-0490.
