Taritha Parsylene Middleton slept away peacefully on Thursday, August 3, 2006, about 5:30 p.m. at the family home in Goldsboro.

Taritha was the third child born to the late John D. and Lillie Marita Middleton of Kenansville, N.C. (Duplin County). Later the family moved to Goldsboro, where the family has lived for over sixty-six years.

She was a graduate of Dillard High School. Taritha received an Associate degree in Elementary Education from Fayetteville State Teachers College. She continued her education and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Winston Salem State University. Having a desire and a deep thirst for more knowledge, she studied at New York University (NYU) and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and Childhood Development. She also did further study at NYU in Speech Pathology.

Taritha taught for over 40 years helping to train elementary youth in Duplin and Wayne counties. She retired as a speech therapy teacher from Norwayne Junior High School. Before her illness, she was very active in many organizations including her church, First African Baptist, where she was a member for over 50 years and active in the choir, Sunday school, and other church ministries.

Taritha was an active member of Dillard Alumni and took cruises and trips with the organization. She was crowned Miss Dillard High one year for having raised the largest amount of money for the school.

Taritha held membership in the Goldsboro Chapter of The Continental Societies Incorporated and in the Goldsboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated for many years, where she participated in many of their activities. She served as the National Financial Secretary of The Continental Societies Incorporated. She attended all of the National Conventions for both organizations until her illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Lillie Middleton; three brothers, Abraham Vincent, Johnnye Devine and Theodore Ruvinsky; one nephew, A.V. Middleton Jr.; and two dear brothers-in-law, Francis Larkin and Judson H. Furlow. She leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Eloise M. Larkin of Goldsboro and Roberta LaVerne M. Furlow of Hampton, Va.; one sister-in-law, Bettye Middleton of Milford, Conn.; one brother, Harvey L. Middleton of New Haven, Conn.; four nieces, Gerardette M. Furlow, Cherie D. Furlow, Lisa Valerie Brown (husband, Marlon), and Taritha LaVon Middleton; three nephews, Jerome H. Furlow (wife, Chechena), Dwayne M. Middleton (wife, Rore´), and David Middleton; four grand-nieces, Waverly, Dylan, Sydney and Londonn; four grand-nephews, Matthew, Nicolas, Joel, Bryce. A devoted cousin, Hazel Lillie Middleton-Farrior; and any other cousins. Also, a dear care provider, Mildred Willis, who treated her as a sister or mother.

The funeral will be Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at 11 a.m. at First African Baptist Church, 803 Harris St., in Goldsboro. The family will assemble at the Hamilton Funeral Home at 10:20 a.m. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Omega Omega Service will be held Tuesday evening at 7 at Hamilton Funeral Home in Goldsboro.
