GEORGE CARTER

LAGRANGE -- George Carter, 81, of 3630 Fields Station Road, died Monday at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery, with the Rev. Gerald Fowler officiating.

Mr. Carter was born in Lenoir County to the late Rance and Canary Morgan Carter. He was U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired farmer, and a member of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church. He loved children and his hobbies were fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Selma Jones Carter; three daughters, Jackie Tripp and husband, George, of Dunn, Georgia Gallagher and husband, John, of Durham, Tammie Dupree and husband, James, of Pikeville; three sons, Randall Carter and wife, Rose, of LaGrange, Wayne Herring of North Carolina and George Ray Byrd and wife, Lisa, of Swansboro; one sister, Dora Mae Barfield of LaGrange; four brothers, Ransome Carter of Kinston, John Carter of LaGrange, Bobby Carter of LaGrange and Jimmy Carter of Grifton; and 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7 until 8:30 at Rouse Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence.
