Dewey James Merritt, 82, of 1907 Englewood Drive, died Monday afternoon at Britthaven Nursing Home.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The Rev. John Sauls, the Rev. Mark Whitfield and the Rev. Jimmy Whitfield will officiate. Interment will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Willow Dale Cemetery.

Mr. Merritt was born in Sampson County to the late Herndon L. Merritt and Katie M. Merritt. He retired from the service department at Sears with 21 years of service and also had been self-employed.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bernice Harrell Merritt; his daughters, Mardie M. Sauls and husband, the Rev. John Sauls, of Sanford, Kate Merritt and Danny Mozingo of Goldsboro, June Merritt of the home and Robin Merritt of Rosewood; his sisters, Rebecca Porter of Kelly and Rachel Williamson, of Goldsboro; his brothers, Edwin Merritt of Goldsboro, Herndon "Pitt" Merritt Jr. of Currie; Bill Merritt of Reidsville; and Alton Merritt of California; six grandchildren, John Sauls III of Sanford, Michele Sauls Beal and husband, Greg, of Sanford, Tracy Sauls Whitfield and husband, the Rev. Mark Whitfield, of Broadway, Ashlee Newton, Michael Newton and Sierra Malpass, all of Rosewood; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Whitfield, Kristen Whitfield, and Seth Beal.

The family will receive friends at Seymour Funeral Home following the service on Wednesday evening, and other times at the residence.
