MOUNT OLIVE -- Billy Wayne Patterson, 60, of 2057 O'Berry Road., died Wednesday morning at home.

He was a native of the Albertson area of Duplin County, and was son of the late Adolph and Mary Albertson Patterson. He graduated from East Duplin High School and Wayne Technical Institute and was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Patterson was very active in veterans causes and was Past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9959 in Mount Olive and the American Legion Post 11 in Goldsboro. He helped organize AmVets Post 16 in Wayne County and served as its first commander and also was Past District Commander of the American Legion. He received the James C. Gates Award from the VFW and was also a national winner for outstanding service to veterans. His hobbies were woodworking and artistry and he was employed by the NC Employment Security Commission as a veterans consultant supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Thigpen Patterson of the home; a son, Billy Elwood "Woody" Patterson and his wife, Melissa, of Mount Olive; a daughter, Crystal Lee and her husband, David, of Goldsboro; a brother, Samuel Thomas Patterson, and his wife, Peggy, of Seven Springs; a sister, Judith P. Simmons, and her husband, Curtis, of Albertson; and five grandchildren, Dwayne Strickland, Makaylah Patterson, Kylie Patterson, Jonah Patterson and Meagan Lee.

The funeral will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Friends Meeting, with Gordon Clarke officiating. Interment will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Simmons Family Cemetery on Coy Smith Road, Albertson.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service on Friday evening, and other times at the residence.

Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be directed to Rhodes Friends Meeting or the V.F.W. Post 9959 in Mount Olive.
