MARJORIE OVERMAN

WALLACE -- Marjorie Moore Overman died Friday at her home in Wallace following a lengthy illness.
Marjorie Moore was born in Wayne County to Ezra Alexander and Mallie Edwards Moore. Her father died in France during World War I when she was one month old, not ever having seen her. She was reared on a farm west of Goldsboro by her mother and stepfather Leslie Bright Thompson. She had a sister and two brothers.
In 1942 she married Thell Becton Overman. Following his discharge from the U.S. Navy at the close of World War II they moved to Wallace where Thell was engaged in teaching and coaching until his retirement in 1979. Marjorie has continued to live in Wallace until her death.
Marjorie received her AB Degree from Guilford College in Greensboro with majors in Psychology/Philosophy and Sociology. She has followed a career of social work with the exception of a few years spent rearing her children while doing volunteer church and community work and some substitute teaching. She finished her public career as a North Carolina Probation and Parole Officer for her last eighteen years before her retirement in 1979.
Following retirement, Marjorie engaged in church and community affairs. One consuming project was the effort to bring added medical care to her town and community. She eventually organized The Duplin General Hospital Foundation and served as chairman for eight years. During that time the bond issue was passed for the renovation of the hospital and seed money was raised by the foundation, nearly one million dollars, in order to attract money from other foundations. A member of the Wallace United Methodist Church, Marjorie's greatest interest has always been her life long association with the United Methodist Church and which she has served on the local, district, conference and jurisdictional levels.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her husband, Thell Becton Overman who died in 2000 and her daughter Marjorie Etta Overman Griffin Mitchell who died in 1996.
She is survived by her daughter, Ann Moore Yates and husband Ronald; her son in law, Phil S. Mitchell and wife, Joan; her grandchildren, Ann Elizabeth (Betsy) Griffin Fontaine; Roy Lee (Tripp) Griffin III and wife, Karen; Phillip Jonathan Mitchell and wife, Jenifer; Mary Frances Yates Fiechter and husband, Charles; and Robert Becton Yates; seven great grandchildren, Mickie Alexandra, Kamryn Joan, Lillian Etta, and Jonathan Edward Mitchell; Philip Aylette and Evan Griffin Fontaine; and Roy Lee (Blade) Griffin IV. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Thompson of LaGrange; her brothers, James William Thompson and wife Carolyn of Goldsboro and Leslie Edwards Thompson of Goldsboro; as well as a number of nieces and nephews, and a cousin, Frances H. Gay.
Graveside funeral services were held today at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery and a memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Wallace United Methodist Church with Dr. Frances Gay and Rev. Rufus Butner officiating.
A short period of visitation was held at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home prior to the graveside service and at other times will be at the family home in Wallace.
