Died May 16, 2006

Walena Smith Kornegay died today at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Thurman Horney officiating. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Mrs. Kornegay was the youngest daughter of the late Albert Jesse and Cora Rose Smith of the Rosewood community and was married to the late Borden Kornegay for 56 years.

Mrs. Kornegay graduated from Rosewood High School and attended Elon College A career civil service employee, she retired in 1992 following 31 years of service. Her career included 26 years as secretary to the Wing Commanders of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. She had been an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Mount Olive and most recently was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Goldsboro.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen L. Kornegay and wife, Martha Rogers Kornegay, of Goldsboro; and James W. "Pete" Kornegay and wife, Rose Westbrook Kornegay, of Camden. In addition, she is survived by two grandchildren, Caroline E. Kornegay of Southern Pines; and Benjamin J. Kornegay of Camden. Her living siblings include a sister, Luta Lawrence of Rosewood, and her twin brother, Walton Smith of Evans, Ga.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Steve and Martha Kornegay, 409 Airle Place, Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Alzheimer's Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 208, Raleigh, N.C., 27605; or to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 204 E. Chestnut St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
