BRUCE BENTON SR.

Died March 2, 2006

APEX -- Bruce J. Benton Sr., 90, father of Anne B. Sewell of Goldsboro, died Thursday at Western Wake Hospital.

Mr. Benton was the son of Howard and Lillian Benton. He was a lifetime member of Apex Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He was a charter member of the Apex Fire Department and was a member of Apex Masonic Lodge # 584 and was recently presented the Diamond Jubilee Award for 60 years of Masonic membership He retired as an engineer with the Seaboard/Coastline Railroad in 1976.

In addition to his daughter Anne, and her husband Craig, Mr. Benton is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marie Wilkerson Benton; another daughter, Barbara B. Lawson, and her husband, Mike, of Raleigh; a son, the Rev. Bruce Benton Jr., and his wife, Lynda, of Sanford; one sister, Margaret B. Ferry of Apex; two brothers, James H. Benton of Charlotte and Robert L. Benton of Cary; and six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life and resurrection will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Apex Baptist Church. The Rev. Phil Qualls and the Rev. Bruce Benton Jr. will officiate Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends in the church parlor prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence at 412 S. Hughes Street, Apex.

The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice; or to the Apex Baptist Church, Benevolence Fund, 110 South Salem Street, Apex, N.C., 27502.
