BETTY B. SUMMERLIN

Betty Burns Summerlin, 87, died Monday at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
A private interment will be held Thursday at Wayne Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Homer Morris officiating.
Mrs. Summerlin was the daughter of Jesse Worth and Alice Oliver Burns of Robeson County. She graduated from Rowland High School and the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, now University of North Carolina at Greensboro. After teaching for two years, she married Charles Allen Summerlin Jr. in 1942, while he was serving in the United States Army. They lived in towns near Army bases in Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas, before he was sent into combat to the European Theater of War. After World War II, they came to Goldsboro to live. He was associated with Crawford-Norwood Realtors, and was also a member of the North Carolina National Guard. They were charter members of Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Goldsboro, and she was a member of the Friendly Sunday School Class. In 2001, they moved to Cypress Glen Retirement Community in Greenville.
In addition to her husband of 63 years, she is survived by one daughter, Betsy Harrold, and her husband, Joseph Michael Harrold, of Goldsboro; two sons, C. Allen Summerlin, and wife, Pam, of Kinston; and Page Summerlin and wife, Barbara, of Lynchburg, Va. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Doug and Tammy Daughtry of Greenville; Mary Charles and husband, David Jacobs, of Mount Olive; Danny Summerlin and wife, Missy, of Chapel Hill; Shelley Summerlin of Raleigh; and Ben, Jennifer, and Jill Summerlin of Lynchburg, Va.; seven great-grandchildren, Cole, Dylan, and Noah Jacobs of Mount Olive; Tristyn and Drake Daughtry of Greenville; and Charles and Sallie Summerlin of Chapel Hill. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Ruth Burns, Elaine Burns, Iola Burns Winesett, Frances Page, and Julia Beane Summerlin; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Burns Stuart of Dillon, S.C.; Louise Burns Nye of Fairmont; and Ann Burns Tarkington of Kokomo, Ind.; and ten brothers, Joe, Jake, Willie, Bob, and Pete Burns, and Bill, Frank, Jack, Cole, and Preston Page.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice, or to the American Parkinson Disease Association, Duke University Health System, 932 Morreene Road, Durham, N.C., 27705.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Betsy and Mike Harrold, 504 Cashwell Place, Goldsboro.
