NEWTON GROVE -- Bessie M. Thornton, 99, of 12374 Roanoke Road, died Wednesday.
The funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Roanoke Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Willard Hardison and the Rev. Mark Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Jordan's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Betsy Mattocks of Clinton and Thelma Tyler and Faye Martin of Newton Grove; one son, Henry L. Thornton of Fayetteville; and 38 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Vaden Thornton; one daughter, Rachel T. Owens; and three sons, Johnnie D. "Jap" Thornton, Joseph Thornton and Lloyd Smith.
The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m.. at West & Dunn Funeral Home.
