MARY BORGOGNONI

Died Feb. 15, 2006

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mary Bynum Holmes Borgognoni, 91, of 207 W. Main St., died Wednesday, February 15th.

She was daughter of the late Robert P. Holmes Sr. and Lillie Grant Holmes. She attended Randolph Macon Women's College, received an A.B. degree from Duke University, a masters degree and doctorate in psychology from the University of North Carolina, where she taught educational psychology and psychological statistics. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Olive, where she taught Sunday school and had served on the board of trustees. She was named Layman of the Year in 1985. She had also served on the board of trustees at Chapel Hill Methodist Church and on the board of trustees of the Methodist Retirement Home in Durham.

Mrs. Borgognoni had many civic interests. She was one of the founders of the Woman's Auxiliary of the North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill and was later named honorary Life Member. In 1992, she was cited as a Special Friend of Mount Olive College. She was a member of Friends of the Library at UNC, member of the Twentieth Century Club, the oldest active book club in the state, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Elisabeth Holmes Lee of Lumberton, and Mrs. Joe Clawson of Lenoir; one nephew, Dr. Robert P. Holmes III of New Bern; and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husbands, William Whatley Pierson and Alfredo Borgognoni.

Services will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Olive with Dr. H. Dennis Draper Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive.

The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. in the church library.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Mount Olive, or to Mount Olive College, Pierson-Holmes Endowment, 634 Henderson St., Mount Olive, NC 28365.

Arrangements are with Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive.
