Mayron Chester Pope, 78, of 311 Woodview Drive, died Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The Rev. Danny Smith and Dr. Don Sauls will officiate. Interment will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

A Wayne County native, Mr. Pope was the son of the late Joseph Forest Pope and Geneva Waddell Pope. He owned and operated Southern Cafeteria and the Candy Kitchen and was a member of Living Waters Free Will Baptist Church. He served in the Merchant Marines and his hobbies were hunting, fishing and water skiing. He also had a great love for bull dogs.

Mr. Pope is survived by his wife, Ruby Smith Pope; two daughters, Susan Walston of Goldsboro and Ginny Byrd and husband, Darwin, of Beautancus; a son, Greg Pope and wife, Suzanne, of Pikeville; his grandchildren, Carmen Pope of Wilmington, Lt. Dave Walston of Jacksonville, Fla., and Noelle Walston of Goldsboro; and his mother-in-law, Thelma Smith of LaGrange.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Forrest Pope; one sister, Ida Lee Wooten; and two brothers, Cecil Pope and Charles Ray Pope.

Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Living Waters Free Will Baptist Church, P.O. Box 68, Pikeville, N.C., 27863.

The family will receive friends at Seymour Funeral Home following the service on Thursday night, and other times at the residence of Greg and Suzanne Pope at 129 Glenwood Drive in Pikeville.
