Bessie Helen Thompson Stevens, 82, of the Grantham Community, died Tuesday evening at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory. The Rev. Scott McCue will officiate. Interment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mrs. Stevens was born in Wayne County to the late Joseph Preston and Lizzie Viola Thompson and was the widow of Lewis McDonald Stevens. She was retired from farming and from Wayne County Public Schools, having worked for many years in the cafeterias at Grantham School and Southern Wayne High School.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kirby I. and Carolyn Stevens of Grantham; her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Thomas Herring of Grantham; her granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Dawn and Jimmy Cox of Jordan's Chapel and Cristyl and Victor "Buzz" Jones Jr. of Pikeville; her grandson and his fiancée, Adam Stevens and Leslie Quinn of Goldsboro; and grandson, Tyler Herring of Grantham; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Melissa and Monica Cox of Jordan's Chapel; one brother and sister-in-law, Chester and Pinkie Thompson and two sisters, Colene Thompson of Grantham and Betty Grantham of Mount Olive; an aunt, Essie Pulliam of Morehead City; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro, and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Thomas Herring, 3086 Old Grantham Road in the Grantham community.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to a church or charity of one's choice.
