RICHLANDS -- The funeral for James Walter Bateman Sr., 87, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Richlands First Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Volney Bryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Griffin Family Cemetery in Comfort.
Mr. Bateman died Monday at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of Semper Fidelis Masonic Lodge No. 680 A.F.&A.M.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Griffin Bateman of the home; one son, James Walter Bateman Jr. of Richlands; two daughters, Judy Bateman Sumner and Frances Bateman Strickland of Creedmoor; one brother; Robert Bateman of Murphysboro, Ill.; two sisters, Ruth West of Apple Valley, Minn., and Bonnie Benson of LaGrange, Ill; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Jones Funeral Home in Richlands.
