SARAH S. PATE

PIKEVILLE -- Sarah Smith Pate, 74, died Sunday evening after a lingering illness.

A native of Wayne County, she was the daughter of the late David Leo Smith and Inez Hicks Smith. Mrs. Pate was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church, where she was very active in the Jolly 60's and taught Sunday school for over 30 years. While a member of Faith, she was also active in their visitation program. Mrs. Pate was a member of Farm Bureau and an active member of the Antioch Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as chaplain. Mrs. Pate had a passion for gardening in her yard and flowers.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Dann Patrick and Rev. Fred Carraway officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

A loving wife and mother, Sarah's family includes her husband of almost 54 years, Handley Thomas Pate; daughters, Beth Pate Hancock (Ricky) of Loveville, Maryland, Amy Pate Webber (Grant) of Goldsboro; son Mark T. Pate Sr. (Terri) of Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren; Leah A. Pate, Mark T. Pate, Jr., Joshua D. Pate, Hannah F. Pate, of Pensacola, Fla., and Austen G. Webber and Bryce T. Webber of Goldsboro; step-granddaughter; Kelly Hancock of Loveville, Md.; sisters, Jane S. Bailey (Terry) of Raleigh, Georgia S. Futrell (Elliott) of Goldsboro; niece; Elizabeth A. Futrell of Durham; nephew, Paul Bailey Sr. (Fran) of Raleigh; and great nephews, P. Dru Bailey Jr. and W. Allen Bailey of Raleigh.

Memorial donations may be made to Faith Free Will Baptist Church, 1200 W. Grantham St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, and other times at her residence, 2356 Big Daddy's Road, Pikeville.
