BEAUTANCUS -- Elbert James Davis Sr, 89, of 1592 Beautancus Road, died Saturday morning at his home in the Beautancus community near Mount Olive.

He was a retired farmer and a long-time member of Bear Marsh Baptist Church. In past years he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, church treasurer, and was a member of the church choir. He had served on the Board of Directors of Duplin General Hospital for 22 years and was a past member of the Board of Directors of both the Duplin County Farm Bureau and the F.C.X. in Mount Olive.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bear Marsh Baptist Church. The Reverends Millard F. Bounds and Michael W. Whitesides will officiate. Interment will immediately follow in the Brock Family Cemetery, located behind the residence.

He is survived by his widow, Christine Pate Brock, to whom he had been married for 67 years; a son, Elbert James "Jimmy" Davis Jr. and wife, Patricia Bell Davis, of the Beautancus community; two daughters, Ann Douglas Davis Byrd and husband, Stanley, of the Beautancus community, and Kaye Davis Grady and husband, Charles, of Mount Olive; two brothers, Adrian Davis and wife, Lola Mae, of Calypso, and the Rev. Herbert Davis and wife, Thelma, of Mount Olive; six grandchildren, DeWayne Byrd, Darwin Byrd and wife, Ginny, Darrell Byrd and wife, Jennifer, Renee Byrd Bradshaw and husband, Steve, Douglas Grady and wife, Karla, and Brian Grady and wife, Kim; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew Grady, Rebecca Grady, Jacob Grady, Braxton Bradshaw, Barrett Bradshaw, Davis Byrd, Jenna Grady, and Evan Brock; his "guardian angel," Ellen Hardison of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Maggie Johnson Davis; a sister, Ora Lee Davis Merritt; and four brothers, Arnold Davis, Roy E. "Dollie" Davis, George "Buck" Davis, and Henderson Davis.

The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. At other times, they will be at the residence.
