LARKIN T. MCKENZIE

Died Dec. 14, 2005

Larkin Taurant McKenzie, 86, a loving husband and father and a resident of Trussville, Ala., passed away Dec. 14, 2005.

McKenzie was born in Ashland, Miss., to Judge and Mrs. Larkin T. McKenzie Sr. He attended Hines Junior College before joining the United States Army. He served in World War II in both the Paris Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge with the 9th Infantry. He retired from active duty Army as a major and from the Army Reserve Forces as a colonel. He worked for the Department of Defense as a civilian personnel officer for 37 years.

Larkin was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, Ala. He was an avid tennis player and a member of Greentree Racquet and Tennis Club and later, the South Highland Tennis Club. He won the senior Olympics in both Texas and Alabama. He especially enjoyed Christmas and spending time with his family. He was an honorable serviceman, loyal husband, devoted father and a gentleman. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Larkin was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Malcolm McKenzie, and sisters, Ruth Evelyn Glover and Aneva Curry.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Carrie "Bette" McKenzie; four children, Karen Camp and husband, Gary, of Goldsboro, Lauren Powell and husband, Edward, of Birmingham, Larkin McKenzie Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, of Tipton, Mich., and Donna Sears of Trussville; a brother, Neil McKenzie and wife, Zekie, of Grenada, Miss; a sister, Beth Welch and husband, Dr. G. Burns, of Starkville, Miss.; 10 grandchildren, Erin, Jason and Steele Camp, Adam and Rachel Powell, Larkin III, Aubrey and Taylor McKenzie and David and Jenny Sears; a great-grandchild, Brian McKenzie; and a large extended family.

The family will hold a memorial today at Grace Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. The family will receive guests at 5:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m.

Interment will be Saturday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. at Memorial Gardens of Mobile, Ala., with a brief visitation immediately preceding the service.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Gary Camp, Edward Powell, Larkin McKenzie III, Jason Camp, Steele Camp, Adam Powell, David Sears II and Taylor McKenzie.

The Rev. Chris H. Jones will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 219, Trussville, Ala., 35173, the Alzheimer's Association of Central Alabama or Medical Center East Hospice of Birmingham.
