FREMONT -- The funeral for Lucy Applewhite Best , 83, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. James Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, on Memorial Church Road.

Mrs. Best died Tuesday at her home.

She was a native of Wayne County and was one of 10 children born to the late George and Cecil Exum. She graduated from Wayne County Public Schools and, in her later years, attended Wayne Community College. She worked in health care for 20 years and then served as a foster grandparent for many years. She was a member of Shady Grove Primitive Baptist Church and was a former member of St. James Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, in Fremont.

Survivors include her husband, Russell Jacob Best of the home; seven daughters, Janice (Robert) Daniels of Fremont, Sandra F. Gray of Utica, N.Y., Phyllis K. Exum of Baltimore, Md., Barbara (Walter) Byron of Fremont, Judy (Parker) Rayford of Virginia Beach, Va., Johnice (Rodney) Tabron of Goldsboro and Kisha (Kelly) Thompson of England; three sons, William Edward (Joyce) Applewhite of Fremont, Carlton (Crystal) Gray of Zebulon and Montola (Catherine) Gray of Richmond, Va.; two stepsons, Percy (Gunnie) Pate of Lucama and Timothy Best of Wilson; 14 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson, Emmanuel Walker of Dudley; one sister, Georgia Brown of Atlanta, Ga. and two sisters-in-law, Mabel Hall of Fremont and Millie Ann Wilder of Black Creek.

Condolences may be sent to Rhodes Funeral Home in Fremont, and the wake will be held there today from 6 until 8 p.m.

Carlton Gray's Funeral and Cremation Services in Raleigh is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
