George Alton Johnson, 79, of 203 E Lockhaven Drive, died Tuesday.

The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Goldsboro. Dr. Glenn Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Johnson was born in Wayne County, grew up in Kenly and graduated from Kenly High School in 1943. He was the son of the late George R. and Alma Kirby Johnson and was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel Cannady Johnson.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and its choir, and was a former member of the III Century Singers.

Mr. Johnson retired with 20 years of service as a reporter with the Goldsboro News-Argus and was a former member and past president of the N.C. Farm Writers and Broadcasters Association.

He was a former member of the Goldsboro Jaycees and Goldsboro Moose Lodge. He was a charter member and past president of the Exchange Club of Goldsboro and served as club secretary for many years. He also was the state editor of the N.C. District Exchange News for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice B. Johnson; one son, George Alton "Al" Johnson Jr. and his wife, Lynne, of Pikeville; one daughter, Debra Rachel Johnson Poland, and her husband, Brice, of Elm City; two stepsons, Julian Bone and his wife, Marie, of Topsail Island and Charlie Bone and his wife, Ann, of Thailand; a stepdaughter, Nancy B. Pippen, and her husband, Calvin, of Zebulon; a sister, Marilyn J. Rhodes of Goldsboro; three grandchildren, Stuart Justin Poland, Stephen Jarrett Poland and Cannady Lynne Johnson; and six step-grandchildren, Jason Pippin, Adam Pippin, Aaron Bone, Ellen Bone, Ruth Bone and Abby Bone.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall prior to the service, and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church, 125 S. John St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530; or to Mount Olive College, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.

The family is being served by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
