CHARLES BOWIE

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Charles Edward Bowie, 82, a former resident of Goldsboro, died Friday at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Albemarle to the late James D. and Lela Holt Bowie. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1942. As an aerial gunner, he flew combat missions in Europe during World War II, earning an ETO ribbon with battle stars and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He also served in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired from the Air Force with 30 years of service. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a life member of Myrtle Beach Masonic Lodge #353.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Johnson Bowie; three sons, Charles E. Bowie Jr. of Adelphi, Md., and James Alan Bowie and Roger Lee Bowie of Myrtle Beach; a sister, Jewell Bowie Stockton of Myrtle Beach; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held today at 2:30 in the chapel of McMillan-Small Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Timmerman officiating. Burial, with Masonic rites, will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home to receive friends one hour prior to the service this afternoon.
