GAIL B. MURPHY
March 2, 1933-Sept. 19, 2005
Gail B. Murphy, 72, of Morehead City, formerly of Goldsboro, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2005 at Duke University Hospital.
She was born in Savannah, Ga. on March 2, 1933, to Henry Luther and Henrietta Bennett. She was youngest of three children and was preceded in death by her brother Henry, her sister, Jackie, and her sister-in-law, Christine Morris.
Gail is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Cecil R. Murphy of Morehead City. She is also survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sandra Murphy of Goldsboro; daughter and son-in-law, Malinda and Keith Sink of Raleigh and three grandsons, Eric Murphy of Beaufort and Bennett and Murphy Sink of Raleigh; Cousin, Billie Porter of Savannah, Ga. and sisters-in-law, Gloria Smythers of Roanoke, Va., Gene Pandtle of Savannah, Ga., Marie Sikorski of Raleigh and Hilda Newbry of Otway; and many special nieces and nephews.
Gail graduated from Savannah High School and entered into the nursing program at St. Joseph Hospital in Savannah. It was when she was working in the pediatric ward at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah that she met and married Cecil "Murph" Murphy, who was a career Air Force pilot. During her many years as an Air Force wife, the family moved to destinations all over the country and overseas, including Puerto Rico and Guam. Gail loved to travel, play bridge and spend time with her family and friends. One of her greatest loves was fishing, a sport she learned as a young girl with her father. She and her family fished in New Mexico, Canada, North Dakota and Minnesota. After moving to Carteret County, Gail loved fishing on Core Banks and off of the family boat. Gail worked as an Area Manager with World Book Encyclopedia while living in Goldsboro, N.C., in the 1970's.
She was a hospice volunteer at Atlantic Beach and during the past several years has been very active in the Brandywine Garden Club and four different bridge clubs. Gail loved her family and spending time with Murph and her children and grandchildren gave her the greatest joy. She was a wonderful friend and cherished each of her friendships dearly. She never knew how many lives she touched until she recently became ill.
Her family would like to thank all those who have called, written cards and visited Gail during her illness.
Gail will be remembered in a service at Munden's Funeral Home in Morehead City on Friday September 23rd at 3 p.m.
