PRINCETON -- Melvin R. Allen, 80, of 5645 Massey Holt Road, died Thursday evening at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Homegoing services will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. The Rev. James Corbett and the Rev. Dennis Pollock will officiate. A graveside service will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Allen was born in Johnston County on January 26, 1925, to the late Charlie Handsome and Peggy Allen. He was the owner of Buckleberry Farms and a retired farmer and avid outdoorsman. He was a member of Riverside Free Will Baptist Church in Princeton where he was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Naomi Adams Allen; three daughters, Faye Baumgartner and her husband, Frank, of Princeton, Barbara Willoughby of Princeton and Karen Hartley and her husband, Jesse, of Princeton; one brother, Gene Allen of Princeton; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a special friend, John Harris and his wife, Georgia; his caretaker, Iris Allen; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other special friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his son, David "Buck" Allen; two brothers, T.G. Allen and Charles Allen; and one sister, Inez Ingram.

The family will receive friends at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory following the service on Saturday, and other times at the residence.
