PIKEVILLE -- Owen Franklin Whaley, 86, died Saturday.

A service to celebrate his life will be held tonight at 7 at Seymour Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Richard Glosson officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

A native of Wayne County, Mr. Whaley was the thirteenth child of fourteen children born to the late Frank and Ida Barnes Whaley. He was a 1937 graduate of Nahunta High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Mr. Whaley was a retired farmer and a member of Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church. He was an avid fresh-water fisherman and served his country in the Asiatic Pacific in the United States Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Christine Davis Whaley; son, Michael Owen Whaley and wife Dorothy of Rosewood; daughter, Maxine Whaley Sasser and husband Glenn of Rosewood; grandchildren, Timothy Owen Sasser and wife Shari, Kelly Sasser Mitchell and husband Lee, Michelle Whaley Jones and husband Don; six great-grandchildren and a brother-in -law, Ernest Davis of Chesapeake, Va.

Mr. Whaley was preceded in death by all of his siblings.

Pallbearers will be his nephews, Edsel and Selby Hooks, Othal Minshew, Jovance and Kenneth Whaley, and Bruce Miller.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service tonight, and at other times at the residence.
