LELA W. FORNES

DURHAM -- Lela Mae Wells Fornes, 81, died Thursday morning at Durham Regional Hospital after several years of declining health.

Mrs. Fornes was born May 14, 1924, in the Belfast community in Wayne County and was the daughter of the late John Kirby and Ola Scott Wells. She had lived in Durham for 50 years. Mrs. Fornes retired from Thalheimers of Durham, after which she was employed by the family of Mary Rollins Pickell as a private attendant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Fornes and five brothers.

Mrs. Fornes is survived by a niece, a nephew; a loving cousin; and her guardian, Margaret Watson and husband, Donnie, on whom she depended and dearly loved.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Restlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. James Williams officiating. Casket bearers will be Gary Kyles, Wayne N. Watson, Danny McDuffie, Ricky N. Robinson, Edward "Yank" Sullivan and Billy Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be the Law Firm of Clayton, Myrick and McClanahan.

The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 9:30 until 10:30 at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
