EUREKA — Eli "Pete" Turlington Smith Jr, 78, of 778 Turner Swamp Road died Friday at his home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 7 p.m. from the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. The Elder John Hess and the Reverend Robert Fletcher will officiate. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

Mr. Smith was a native of Wayne County and was born on September 13, 1926, to the late Eli Turlington Smith Sr. and Retha Blow Smith. He was a lifetime farmer in the Eureka community, active in the Farm Bureau and Production Credit. He served on the ABC Board for many years. Mr. Smith was a charter member of the Eureka Ruritan Club serving in many capacities and a charter member of the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Smith was a member of Aycock Primitive Baptist Church where he currently was a Deacon.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean Spruill Smith; one daughter, Brenda Smith Baker of Fremont; one son, Linwood Talmadge Smith and wife, Donna, of Fayetteville; one sister, Sedalia Smith Green and her husband, David, of Fremont; one sister-in-law, Anne M. Smith; and seven grandchildren, Amy and Daniel Smith of Goldsboro, Brittany, Brandon, Brooke, Bradley and Baylee Smith of Fayetteville.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son-in-law, James "Bud" Lemuel Baker and a brother, William Henry Smith.

The family will receive friends following the service Monday evening at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
