Laura E. Best, 73, of 716 National Drive, died Tuesday at her home.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. James Disciples of Christ Church in Fremont. The Rev. James O. Williams will officiate. Burial will follow at Old Mill Cemetery.

Mrs. Best was a native of Wayne County, born to the late John and Alberta Rich. She was a member of St. James Disciples of Christ Church where she served as secretary. She was a graduate of Dillard High School and a 1953 graduate of North Carolina A & T State University. She later received her degree from Wayne Community College and was retired from Cashwell Center in Kinston.

She is survived by three sons, Matthew Best Jr. and wife, Ethel Mae, of Goldsboro, Carlton D. Best Sr. and wife, Margaret, of Goldsboro, and Darryl Best Sr. and wife, Marvena, of Hamden, Conn.; an adopted son, Leonza Rich and wife, Gloria Jean, of Goldsboro; two daughters, Joniselle Gardner and Teresa Patterson and husband, Derick, of Greensboro; adopted daughters, Jarwonnia Best of Goldsboro, Ronnie Brinson of Raleigh, Stephanie Corpening of Greensboro, and Mary Anderson of Goldsboro; one sister, Roberta Nick of Goldsboro; 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Matthew (Bud) Best Sr. and a sister, Sarah Cain.

A wake service will be held today from 6 until 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. The family will receive friends other times at the residence.
