DR. MATT HARPER JR.

KINSTON -- Dr. Matt Cleveland Harper Jr., 80, of 3713 Sand Clay Road, died last Thursday at Duke University Medical Center.

A service to celebrate his life will be held this Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Rouse Funeral Home in LaGrange. The Rev. Lacy Oliver will officiate.

Dr. Harper was born in Marion, S.C., to the late Matt Cleveland Harper Sr. and Cara Lea Harper. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. and attended Clemson University, the University of North Carolina and Duke University. During his medical career he served 28 years at Caswell Center and 16 years at Cherry Hospital. He loved flying, golf and animals.

He is survived by his longtime friend and caregiver, Terry Connor of Kinston; a sister, Mary Hite of Abbeville, S.C.; three nieces, Pat Ross Edwards and Esther Perry of Anderson, S.C., and Kaye McClung of Cordela, Ga.; and a nephew, Tommy E. Hite Jr. of Abbeville, SC.
