JAY JONES

BELHAVEN -- Hughley J.C. "Jay" Jones, 73, a resident of Belhaven and a former resident of Fairfield and Goldsboro, died Wednesday at the home of his caregiver, Geraldine Greene, at 59 Campbell Lane of Belhaven.

A funeral service will be held Monday at noon at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Mr. Jones was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Feb. 3, 1931. He was the eldest son of the late Clyde Morris Jones and the late Elizabeth Eslick Jones. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, obtaining the rank of staff sergeant. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Following his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Jones worked as production superintendent at Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Goldsboro for 13 years. He also worked as a civil service employee at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base for 12 years.

Mr. Jones is survived by two sons; Gregory J. Jones and wife Carolyn of Summerville, S.C., and Richard L. Jones and wife Shirley of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Tammy J. Strickler and husband Jeff of Stephens City, Va., and Virginia Ginger Ruth and husband Jim of Sumter, Ore.; three brothers, Clyde C. Jones of Marysville, Calif., Douglas W. Jones of Virginia, and Donnie W. Jones of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two step-brothers, Jerry Woods and Robbie Woods of Marysville, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Jason A. Jones of Summerville, S.C., Blake Jones of Goldsboro, Christina and Sarah Schartel of Stephens City, Va., Michelle Chambers of Longview, Wash., Dianne Brauxmaier, Tony Jones, and Eric Hustoft of Portland, Ore.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia E. Jones and one stepbrother, Bobbie Woods.

The family will receive friends this evening from 5 until 7 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and other times at the home of Adell B. Jones, 108 Rollins Drive, Goldsboro, or at the home of Geraldine Greene at 59 Campbell Lane, Belhaven.
