JAMES PITTMAN
Mr. James Ray "Jim" Pittman, 71, died Friday, November 19, 2004, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
A native of Johnston County, he was the son of the late Clarence Pittman and Betsy Pope Pittman. Jim served as managing owner of Pittman Price Co., and provided accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting services for individuals and businesses in Goldsboro and eastern North Carolina for over 40 years. Under his leadership, the firm grew from one to seven offices.
Jim served his country in the United States Air Force. Jim was a CPA and graduated with a B.S. in Accounting from Atlantic Christian College. He continued his education through programs offered by various professional organizations and through serving on various committees. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of School Business Officials Audit Committee, and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants where he served on the Governmental and Audit Sub-Committee and the Continuing Professional Education Sub-Committee.
For those who knew him, Jim will be remembered as a generous, caring man, and loyal friend to so many. Along with a tireless commitment to help others in his community, Jim remained very active in community organizations. Jim served for 10 years with the Wayne County Board of Education and from 1970-1973 he served as chairman.
He had also served on the Goldsboro Crimestoppers Board and the Military Affairs Committee for the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. Jim served as past-president of the Goldsboro Jaycees, the Civitans, the Tuberculosis Association, the American Heart Association, and was a charter member of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club. While serving his community, Jim was the recipient of the Civitan of the Year Award and the Jaycee of the Year Award. He was also a member of the Lions Club and had volunteered with the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Jim served as a board member for the Wayne County Boys and Girls Club and was a life member of the University of North Carolina Educational Foundation. He was also a Mason with Goldsboro Masonic Lodge #634 A.F. & A.M.
The love of Jim's life was God, family and friends. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and served as Sunday school teacher and church treasurer for several years. Jim's passion was golf and he was a charter member of Walnut Creek Country Club where he served as its president from 1999-2000. If it was a beautiful day, he enjoyed being on the links sharing shots and laughter with his friends.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Goldsboro, with Dr. Leon Smith and the Rev. Scott Thrailkill presiding. Burial with Masonic rites will be at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
Jim has been devoted for 47 years to his wife, Barbara P. Pittman. Also surviving are his sons, Bunny Ray "Ray" Pittman and wife, Rose, of Fremont, and James H. "Jim" Pittman and wife, Dellmarie, of Fayetteville; his daughter, Deborah N. "Debbie" Pittman of Goldsboro; his grandchildren, Joshua Ray Pittman, Hannah Beth Pittman, Christina Marie Pittman, Mary Carty Pittman and Samuel Causey Pittman; his brothers, C.L. "Tom" Pittman of Lucama, and Bobby Gene Pittman of Spruce Pines; his sisters, Elizabeth Whaley of Warsaw, and Evelyn Pittman of Wilson; and his special friend, his cat Smokey.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jake Pittman, Herbert Pittman and Ed Pittman; and his sister, Eula Barnes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 125 S. John Street, Goldsboro, NC 27534; or to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 until 6 p.m. at Pittman Price Co., 311 E. Walnut St.
The family would like to give special thanks to the 7th Floor Nursing Staff at Wayne Memorial Hospital for their dedicated service and love to Jim during his time of need.
