JOHN G. ALLEY

John Granville Alley, age 67, died Wednesday in Raleigh from a massive heart attack.

He was born in Greensboro, N.C., to the late James Granville Alley and Aliene Thompson Alley and was reared in Goldsboro, N.C. He graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1956, serving as Senior Class President. Following his graduation in 1960 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, he returned to Goldsboro and began working at Gran Alley Company, Inc., founded in 1944 by his father. Upon his father's death in 1987, he was named President of the company, the position he held until the time of his death.

John served in the North Carolina Army National Guard and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. He was involved in numerous civic activities. He served as a President of the Goldsboro Jaycees, Chairman of the Board of the Wayne County Public Library during the library's construction, and was an active member of the Goldsboro Rotary Club. A Mason and a Shriner, he was a member of the Goldsboro Masonic Lodge #634, the Goldsboro York Rite Bodies and the Wayne Shrine Club. He served along with his wife, Jean, as Co-Chairman of the Cancer Crusade for the Wayne County Cancer Society. An active member of Goldsboro Friends Meeting, he served on the Stewardship and Finance Committee and sang in the choir.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Goldsboro Friends Meeting with Pastor David L. Brindle officiating. A private graveside service with Masonic rites will be held at Willow Dale Cemetery with the Reverend Gene Carpenter, Rector, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, officiating.

John was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Jean Smith Alley, who died on August 18, 2004.

He is survived by his son, John G. Alley Jr., M.D., and wife, Sandra, of Raleigh, N.C.; his brother, James T. Alley, M.D., and wife, Barbara, of Macon, Ga.; his sister, Dorothy Alley Hobbs and husband, Grimsley, of Goldsboro, N.C.; his sisters-in-law, Wilma Rae Moody and husband, Harvey, of Rome, Ga., and Barbara Ann Thomas and husband, Larry, of Wilmington, N.C.; his stepmother-in-law, Eula Smith of Louisburg, N.C.; nephews, Bryan Thompson Alley and his wife, Laura, of Goldsboro, N.C., Charles Granville Alley and his wife, Dana, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Grimsley Taylor Hobbs III and his wife, Catherine, of Goldsboro, N.C.; nieces, Cynthia Moody Earwood of Rome, Ga., and Katherine Brittain Hobbs of Chapel Hill, N.C.; great-nieces, Miranda Shae Earwood, Emma Taylor Hobbs, Kristen Michelle Alley and Rebecca Lauren Alley; and great-nephews, Daniel Robert Alley and Joshua Granville Alley.

The family will receive friends Sunday (today) from 6 until 8 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, 2873 U.S. Highway 117 South, Goldsboro.
