REV. EDGAR BENTON

FREMONT -- The Rev. Edgar Allen Benton, 92, born September 26, 1911, in Wayne County, North Carolina, died at home on Davis Mill Road, Fremont, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, September 11, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Estelle Varnell Benton; daughter, Thelma Benton Bissette; son, George Durwood Benton; and a grandson, Shane McCrea Bissette.

He is survived by sons, Ben Benton and wife Cheryl of Pikeville and Jesse Benton and wife Linda of Elm City; daughters Jane Lamm Langley of Bath and Becky Benton Rosen and husband Hank of Goldsboro; ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Emily Gray Ferrell of Wilson; and son-in-law, B.F. Bissette of Pikeville.

He was the son of the late Jesse Becton Benton and Cora Amerson Benton.

He was a retired farmer and a retired carpenter. He finished high school in 1966 in order to become an ordained Free Will Baptist minister. He pastored several churches and was a faithful and dedicated member of Watery Branch Free Will Baptist Church since 1948.

The family wishes to thank the Community Hospice staff and its caregivers as well as Nicole Hamelin for all the special care that was given recently.

The funeral to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at the Watery Branch Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend A.G. Smith officiating.

Visitation will be Monday, September 13, 2004, at Shackleford Funerals and Cremations, 102 North Pine Street, Fremont, N.C., 919-242-4100.
