LEROY WILLIAMS JR.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Leroy Williams Jr., 79, died Friday.

A native of Goldsboro, Mr. Williams graduated from Dillard High School in 1942, attended North Carolina A&T College, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had been a resident of Bridgeport for the past 51 years. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, retiring with 35 years of service, and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a disciple of the First Baptist Church of Stratford, where he served as the church sextant, was a member of the Senior Choir and the Men's Chorus, the Trustee Ministry, the Finance Ministry, the Men's Fellowship. In 1993, the church honored him for his dedicated service to the community by presenting him the First Baptist Church Turtle Award.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Mary Clark Williams of Bridgeport, Conn.; three sons, Lawrence L. Williams of Manchester, Conn., James A. Williams of Richmond, Va., and Michael L. Williams of Waterbury, Conn.; three daughters, Marilyn Council and Annetta Briggs of Bridgeport, Conn., and Diane Watts of Goldsboro; five brothers, Robert and Ralph Williams of Detroit, Mich., Clarence Williams of Newton, Mass., Delindwood Williams of Philadelphia, Pa., and Richard Williams of White Plains, N.Y.; two sisters, Estelle Thorpe of Hamden, Conn., and Elizabeth Mathis of Goldsboro; and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral will be held tonight at 8 at the First Baptist Church of Stratford, with Pastor William B. Sutton III officiating. Interment will be Thursday morning at 10 at Mountain Grove Cemetery in Easton, Conn.

The family will be at the church to receive friends during the two hours prior to the funeral tonight.
