WILLIAM THIGPEN

BEULAVILLE -- William D. Thigpen, retired school principal, died Saturday.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and graduated from Atlantic Christian College in 1949 with a major in mathematics. In 1952, he received a master's degree in school administration and mathematics from East Carolina University. For 30 years, he was a teacher, assistant principal, and principal in the Beulaville and B.F. Grady schools. He was a member of Beulaville Free Will Baptist Church and served on the Mount Olive College Board of Trustees. He also served for 15 years on the Duplin General Hospital Board of Trustees, serving as its chairman for five years.

He is survived by his wife, Ollie W. Thigpen; one son, Duvaul Thigpen of Rockville, Md.; two sisters, Louise Weeks of Mt. Olive and Kathleen Garris of Goldsboro; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Community Funeral Home in Beulaville.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Beulaville Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in the East Duplin Memorial Gardens.
