WESLEY T. TOWNSEND

WILMINGTON -- Wesley Thompson Townsend, of 6657 Trolley Lane, died Thursday. He was 80.

A memorial service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Servant in Wilmington.

Mr. Townsend was a native of Lumberton and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. A 1949 graduate of North Carolina State University, Mr. Townsend dedicated most of his life to agriculture. He joined the Cooperative Extension Service after graduation and served in the Wayne County Extension Office from 1951-1955. After working for agricultural chemical companies for many years, Mr. Townsend returned to the Extension Service in Wayne County in 1973, retiring in 1988 after serving 11 years as Extension Director.

Mr. Townsend's wife of 53 years, Madeline Gaines Townsend, died in 1999.

He is survived by a son, W. Gaines Townsend of Wilmington.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the local 4-H section of the local Cooperative Extension Office.
