MARGARET HERRING

SNOW HILL -- Margaret Ann Henderson Herring of Snow Hill died on Sunday, March 7, 2004, at the age of 67. Although her mind and spirit were willing, her tired body could no longer fight the ravages of an extended illness.

After graduating from Goldsboro High School, Margaret took college level business courses. She enjoyed a career as a bookkeeper and trust officer before starting a family with her husband Jimmie. She was devoted to her family and to her husband's farm, and to that end, she became a caretaker for her mother-in-law and brother-in-law. She supplemented the family income through a thriving rental business, substitute teaching, and selling pecans from the orchard she carefully manicured and maintained. Margaret was an avid seamstress, cook and photographer, winning blue ribbons for many years at the NC State Fair.

As her children grew older, Margaret became active in 4-H and spent over 10 years as a volunteer working with Greene County youth. She was also a two-term member of the Greene County Health Board.

When empty nest syndrome kicked in, she took up hobbies such as traveling and bingo. Her favorite destination was Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island, and priceless family memories were made there.

She leaves behind her devoted husband of 45 years, James Wright Herring, daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Orlando Silva, daughter Katherine Herring Hammond, and grandchildren, Alexander, Caroline, and Zachary Hammond. Her support and guidance will be sorely missed.

Her sisters, Betty Henderson Allinson and Llevaine Henderson Hope, preceded her in death.

A celebration of her life will be held at Eden Christian Church at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to the church.

Arrangements for the service are being made by Wilkerson Funeral Service of Greenville.
